I know of two folk etymologies that are demonstrably wrong. We know it originally came from the Greek diskos which became discus that much is true. But after that? Lots of interchangeable use until it mostly settled on disc being a small round throwable thing and stuff shaped like such an object whereas disks are computer storage.

It's not a UK vs US thing because both have been used extensively in both places. It's not because a nerd got pedantic about floppy disks not being round so they shouldn't be a discus because IBM's early patents for digital storage on magnetic disks already used disk and those were still clearly round.
