How I came to #Emacs - I was a #Vim user who wanted an IRC client with full Vim support. Tried many options, but no luck.

Emacs, Evil (Extensive VI Layer), and ERC (one of the two IRC clients included with Emacs) gave me that IRC client.

(Well, I also wanted an editor that wouldn't barf on rendering or editing Devanagari. Emacs won there too.)
