If your vital infrastructure depends on somebody's hobby project and it goes wrong, that's on you.

You, as project owner, are responsible for making sure that every dependency has someone invested in *your* thing. It doesn't have to be the upstream maintainer, but there needs to be *someone* who can both fix the problem and who cares enough about your thing to do it.
