Y’all, let’s talk about #H1-B. For background, my first tech job was while I was an undergraduate in the late 80s. After i finished my PhD and realized i had no interest in being a professor, I stayed in tech, owning a consultancy.
For a while, I did placements for other higly skilled specialists. I have seen first hand how abused the current system is.
I’ve seen coders at [|] with PhDs, living five to an apartment. There were guys from India who hadn’t seen their families in years, who were being paid 45k a year. Meanwhile, the company continued to lay off Americans and replace them with H1bs. The stockholders loved it, shares went up, the rich got richer.
Do we need an immigration process to allow for highly skilled workers? Yes, with fair wages & a path to citizenship. If they can’t become citizens, then they are underpaid indentured servants brought in to serve the capital class and diminish the power of the workers.
