My mantra is, wherever you are, if there’s a map available of the city, study it before you leave your hostel, hotel, or room. You’d be amazed at how much of a local you become (I’ve had people ask me for directions in a foreign language, thinking that I’m a local in their own country), in addition to boosting self-confidence in general. Map reading skills… yeah!
