I'm always 'reading between the lines' when it comes to news articles such as this. The key criterion for my interest is "Who is paying for it, and who is getting the benefit?"

There was a for-profit private company behind the Melbourne Star investment: "MB Star Properties". They appear to have pressured government at multiple levels to invest in this project. Anyway, they've disappeared without a trace, whomever they were. Now, the Docklands Chamber of Commerce is involved.

It's the same old story. Hairy-chested, square-jawed, Ayn Rand-style "entrepreneurs" posing as "jobs creators", demanding the cost ($100 million in 2008) of their highly speculative business plans should be funded by the tax payer. Not by them going to a bank with their own money and a viable business case.

Now the Docklands Chamber of Commerce appears to be lobbying the Victorian and Melbourne governments to pay to get this things disassembled and moved somewhere else. Still on the taxpayer's dime.

The neoliberal model says if it's something like the Fitzroy Pool, it "has to pay it's own way", without taxpayer funding. But if it's a for-profit scam dreamed up by "business entrepreneurs", then it's only right that the taypayer has to pay for it.
