I think it's mostly a way for the "elders" of the generation to differentiate themselves from the rest of the generation and the accompanying stereotypes. Like, "hey, we still have some of the issues and values of the generation before, so don't blame US for the way THIS generation we're a part of has come to be viewed."
Why they don't just go by birth decade vs. "generations" (considering how fast tech and society move now), I dunno.
