If you told me a group of billionaires calling themselves "effective altruists" wanted to buy the island nation of Nauru I might have thanked the heavens that someone was going to help the war orphans banished there by Australia. Instead they wanted to save themselves from some imagined Millerite apocalypse so they could use the war orphans as subjects in genetic engineering experiments.
