The book says that rote memorization of material is helpful. I agree. It never claims this, but what I'm skeptical of is the commonly held belief that short term memory exercises on one set of facts improves your short term memory ability on a set of completely unrelated facts.

In other words, I believe you cannot improve your raw short term memory. Any improvement you get is essentially trickery.
