I don't know what happened, but after several tries on different occasions, it finally went through and I could identify with my npub.
Alas, the user name for the lightning address needs to be at least six characters long, and therefore I couldn't get ama@lifpay.me, and now I'm stuck with it. It seems that no further changes can be made. ☹️
