“Show me the latest posts on top” is merely one algorithm to choose how content is displayed.
Most social media sites choose one that maximizes their time-on-site through a maze of statistically inferred weights. Sometimes this works well—then they enshittify it for profit, and suddenly it doesn’t.
Personally, I would love “bump to the top people I always like, then posts from people I follow who post rarely that I haven’t seen, then otherwise show me new stuff.”
