It only really smells when it's green. By the time it dries and sits around for decades, all the volatile oils or whatever is in it seem to have dissipated. My sinuses were getting a little irritated, but I didn't notice the distinct smell like when it's green. By the way, the wood has a very different smell than what the crushed leaves give off.
