I spotted some oak galls (also called "oak apples") on a blue oak tree on today's hike in Joseph Grant Park, east of San Jose, California. They are not fruits. They are caused by oak wasps. A chemical secreted by the larvae causes an oak bud to swell into a ball, protecting the larvae. #hiking #photography #oak
