I just finished a 2019 Super Metroid ROM-hack called “Ascent“ that starts with the crazy premise of:
What if Samus starts at the bottom of the planet and makes her way up instead?
Only two years later Nintendo would deliver a mainline Metroid with that same premise.
This had a lot of puzzles, and wasn’t kaizo at all, relying more on paying attention than sequence breaking. I still used sequence breaking all the time.
Its graphics are enhanced a bit, too. There’s a new power up and each room has its unique name, which sounds like a super useful feature to have.
There’s also a mini-Crocomire at one point. I’ve seen it in other ROM-hacks, which leads me to believe Nintendo left it in the code but it was never used.
Recommended if you’re the kind of gamer to play infinite Super Metroid ROM-hacks because it’s the best Metroid and more of it can only mean good news.
