Here is something that I learned at church.
Many people fail to understand what Matthew 16:18 is really saying.
"upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. "
What are gates used for in war? DEFENSE. Gates are used to block entries into strongholds, into houses, into businesses, etc. They are a barrier against an aggressor, they are supposed to stop invasion.
Jesus is telling us that nothing will be able to withstand the Word of God.
On the last day of His stay here on Earth, what did Jesus command us to do? He told us to go out into the world and tell His message. He told us to assault the enemy's strongholds with His Truth.
This is a war that we can not win alone.
"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." Ephesians 6:12 NASB
Rely on God's strength, on the righteousness of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit and the Gates of Hell will not be able to withstand the advance of His truth...
"He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it." Matthew 16:15-18 NASB
"And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” " Matthew 28:18-20 NASB
