My kids were horrified when I told them we had no double glazing or central heating and there were gaps in my windows, and my bedroom faced a field, so I'd wake up with snow on the end of my bed in winter. I'd then have to get dressed in the freezing cold and cycle 3 miles to school. Yes, it sucked, but it did make me resilient.
