“Progressive” is an intentionally ambiguous term with a complex history.
It had a concrete meaning a century ago, during the Progressive Era, but that lapsed. Then, under Reagan’s constant assault on “liberal”, many liberals retreated into calling themselves “progressive”. Finally, since the rise of St. Bernard, “progressive” has been embraced by the anti-liberal left; the socialist populists.
So, these days, it generally refers to the far left.
