in the 2000s, nintendo were just desperately bored with the idea of "game where you sit in front of a TV with a controller and press buttons to move a character around". they had been doing it in 3D and 2D for 10, 20 years already. their fans and customers weren't bored of it at all, but nintendo were. they wanted to make fun toys, and their fans kept saying "no we want to see the guy again. show us another game with the guy!!" and then they would put out a tamagotchi fidget spinner or something
