My wife asked my mom (who was watching the kids) "didn't M tell you she lost her headbands?"
My daughter has gotten in trouble and taking away her new headbands was the punishment. She hadn't told that to Nana, just that "I lost them."
"No, but that's ok. I got her new ones."
'Lost' has two different meanings here. And neither party realized the misunderstanding until I stopped them both to explain it. Plain language is anything but unambiguous.
