My take on this is it’s extremely bullish and a huge win. The fact that you can download Twitter but not Damus from China App Store means nostr is already winning 🏆 Damus might be the first social app that survives from the firewall in China. Here’s the reason:

There’s a distinction between taken down from app store and blocked by the firewall. If you visit China App Store, you will find tons of applications blocked by the firewall.

Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Telegram, Gmail etc. Almost all foreign apps blocked by the Chinese firewall are available to download on China App Store.

You can download it as you like but there’s no way you can use it without VPN. So the logic here is clear: you remove it from China App Store only if you cannot or it’s difficult to block it through firewall.

One great example is Signal and Session. You can still download Signal from China Apple Store but once you installed it and register with your Chinese phone number, you will never receive a SMS code. So it’s effectively blocked.

Session is a fork of Signal by removing the requirement of a phone number. Because it doesn’t require a phone number and adopted some additional IP bypassing technology, you can still use Session app normally without any VPN in China, but you cannot find it on China App Store.

In that sense, the fact that it takes less than two days for Chinese authorities to take it down from Chinese App Store indicates that Damus is a drastic improvement compared to Twitter or any centralized applications in terms of censorship resistance to Chinese firewall. 👏

That was fast
