On the #Fediverse, the instance (server) you choose to join is important... until it isn't anymore. But even then, it still is because you might find yourself unable to connect to certain people because your instance blocks their instance, or the BlueSky bridge. Or you may run into issues with your instance's moderation team or policies that you don't agree with....
But at least when you're first starting out, and even later, depending on what you want out of the Fediverse, they recommend that you find an instance populated by people who share your interests, because the Local Timeline is a great place to meet new friends. After a while, though, once you follow a significant number of people, you stop checking the Local Timeline so much.
You know what would be great, though? If we had a post privacy setting, similar to Followers Only, called Local Only. It's public, and listed, and boostable (but if you boost a Local Only post, it remains Local Only).
I think that might make the Local Timeline more useful, and KEEP it more useful, even as time goes on and you end up following more people on other instances than your home one. 🤔
