He is one of a long line of dashing vigilantes of noble birth who operate in disguise, which goes all the way back to Robin Hood, and even some Arthurian legends. the immediate precursors of Batman were the Green Hornet, The Shadow, Zorro, the Lone Ranger, and the Scarlet Pimpernel, all written by gentiles.
