The M5M is the establishment media who sets the terms battle by benefit of being extant before the rise of alternative media. You can stand on the moral high ground and be ineffective (my stance more often than not), or you can sink to the level of your enemy and fight on a more even playing field.

I agree with the cheap labor reasoning and I'll add: it's being subsidized by the government to the detriment of the citizens who are forced to pay for their own replacement through taxes.
