It is reassuring to throw ourselves into producing more, particularly in an academy that is continually counting and encouraging us to do the same. The creeping sense of insecurity generated by the threat of automation is likely to make that anxiety mount rather than recede, encouraging individuals to throw themselves ever more fully into the rat race in the hope that it ensures the continued existence of their role. The competitive cycles in which managers are “heating up the floor to see who can keep hopping the longest”, as the political economist Will Davies once put it, leaves many of us already disposed to such a response.
