In 1966 ten year old me, a naive white kid from western NY, stood in Watts gazing on the desolation left from the rebellion the year before. Above me stood the Towers, built over 33 years by an Italian immigrant, decorated with broken tiles, glass, and random discarded items. In the shadow of those towers Noah Purifoy was creating art with objects gathered from the ruins of the previous years' violence. That moment has stayed with me, shaping my life and values ever since.
