Is there a game where you can design a spaceship?

I've seen so much science fiction and be *so* disappointed in the way ships are designed...

Often the exterior is designed to look "cool" but that's stupid...

And often the interior (layout/configuration) is also bad.

But why!? Is it just to serve the plot?
