Since it's also right there as a route to greater reproductive success (and sauropods lived a long time and laid huge clutches, plausibly annually) it seems much more plausible.

If A Wizard Did It, I'd expect the egg to have a snorkel and early lung development in the embryo. Inside the snorkel would be a death trap for bugs.
