The public seems to have this perception that trained pilots (who I admit are better suited for spotting objects in flight than the average person) can't mistake the size and speed of objects. Yes, they are trained pilots, but they are also apes strapped into jet fighters. When you fly past a stationary object at high speed, it can trick you into misjudging the speed of the object depending on the speeds, altitude, and angles involved
