The concepts using aspects of Janus, Selene, etc and their Greek and pre-Greek roots ended up coming back in themes to help make the base seem more solid. Avatars got pushed back to the front as that's actually how most of the mythic history worked too oddly. Same writers problems get hit a lot... that's why the tropes are so strong as it's hard to solve the problems any other way.
