I always thought it was popularized by some president (Jackson, maybe?) who was a terrible speller, but that was a half-remembered "fact" from a movie they showed us in school when I was 12. I'm always happy to update with more accurate information. One thing you never said, though: is there ever a time when it's okay to write OK as lowercase (ok)? Is it so common that it's lost its acronym status, or should it still always be capitalized?
