To clarify: as far as I am aware it is illegal under US law to melt currency for the purpose of selling it at a profit.
You can melt it for hobby purposes. If you wanted to sand cast a bronze sword using wheat penny and some added zinc, it is perfectly legal under US law.
I am not sure how it works if you sell the object you make as a hobby. Please consult a YouTube lawyer.
