You know what's funny? That spam bot in your comment.
It brings up a good point. You start a restaurant and hand out free pizza because you think no one will buy your pizza because they haven't tasted it yet. You already made yourself setup to fail.

Developers have that mindset too from the indoctrination they have received in the fiat system.

They build relays, software and tools and hand out their hard work for free because they think no one will buy or support Nostr. Well they are wrong.

Look at X. We are seeing a massive amount of subscriptions being purchased. Their is a lot of people willing to pay for products even before trying it.

The fiat mindset of building things for free. Having a free website or products the. trying to monetize it decades later doesn't work. X isn't even profitable and was never profitable. Many of the free websites online are not profitable.

The growth of nostr if it was only paid might not be as fast as if it's free but the growth would still be there. Lots of people out there are willing to pay for things.

Developers have just accelerated the mindset of providing everything for free so most people won't pay because that's the culture.

I am not a developer but if I was I would not waste my time making products and providing free services. My time is precious.
