But the idea is to make sure every student is employed. The aim of what PhD studentship is for is part of the discussion, is it principally to train a person for high-level work? Is it to carry out research? Are those two things actually fully compatible? What is the sort of training that should be given?
Those are things that I'm not sure there are agreed-upon answers to.
