mastodon api doesn’t even directly allow admins access to DMs outside of going to the database as far as I remember. But it’s totally possible to change from DM to public in the middle of a DM thread for a single post. Other actors wouldn’t see the precious messages in the thread, but it would go into the regular federation system and timelines.

Regardless; if (real) DM data has leaked; then ithe fault is entirely on the server side, not the actor accessing the data (even when scraping / federating public data)
