All they did was turn it into a horse race among the candles (they were big on going to the track as adults, and evidently it started early). Before the hanukkah candles were lit, each person would choose their horse/candle, and the one that burned down first (last?) would win. I think actually they used to place bets on them, though I don't recall doing anything except choosing my candle. I'm sorry if this is unsavory and disturbing to talk about.
