I'm sure you or someone else mentioned this before, but a big problem with the mental block re: cops really is mass media. (esp. fiction IMHO) Everyone's a damn cop. Even the guy overhauling your bad restaurant and yelling at you is like a cop. Superheroes? Like cops. Detectives? Always with cops even when they don't like them. Etc.
