when i was a teenager i begged my folks for months for a PSX for christmas at $400 CAD ($750 CAD adjusted for inflation)

it was a huge ask at the time. my mom was a grad student working part-time to pay the bills, my father was unemployed after a brain injury, and both were swimming in debt.

i knew it was outrageous to ask for something this massive, but that didn't stop me. mostly because, i didn't think i'd get one - and i'd get a PC or sega genesis game instead... which I would have been happy with.

and then, christmas '95, i opened a large box - and it had a frigging launch PSX inside. my mom explained to me that she had spent the entire day driving around the city trying to find one, and finally landed at the official sony store, which sold her the last one in the store room. the last one in the entire city.

it didn't disappoint. it blew away every console and PC i had ever played, and lived up to the reputation for really hot 3d. the problem was - i couldn't afford any games for it, and neither could my parents.

so for the first few months of 1996, i played the included sampler disc over and over. every single demo game and video got played ad nauseam until i was satisfied that i had unlocked every secret and found every hidden area.

two decades later, I lended the PSX to a friend and it never was returned. i was sad about losing the console for its personal value, but even sadder that i had lost that disc which i put so much of my life into.

30 years later, the disc is back in my hands 🙏 can't wait to watch that Twisted Metal 2 demo video with the title music for the 10 billionth time 😆
