It's funny to think that if people could pay just the equivalent of $1 USD a month directly to their favorite creators, those creators would make more money than they ever do through ads on Youtube or brand deals.
Think about it. $12 a year doesn't sounds like much. But you take a channel like nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqll033zrwn8kkh6c0wpv02t7345xhvqq48264ddnu5ywt5u6yv8ysgf6ah7 (nprofile…6ah7) with his 140,000 subscribers on Youtube. That's $1.68 million USD (gross).
On a much smaller scale, indiepocalypse.social has around 89 active monthly users. If they all paid just $1 USD a month, sure that's only $1068 yearly (gross), but that would more than pay for our hosting costs. It would be fully self-sustaining.
I can't fathom what $1 a month to your favorite indie band would mean. Psychostick, for example, has 299K subscribers just on Youtube Music. These are guys who all have day jobs because their music can't cover their bills right now, never mind touring.
Not even including subscribers on Spotify or Apple Music or Tidal or whatever else -- just Youtube Music -- they would be able to split $3.59 million USD every year (gross).
And I'm only using $1 for the ease of math, which I'm admittedly not very good at. lol. Even if it was only, say, $0.25 a month -- just $3 USD a year. Using Psychostick again, that's still $897k a year, which I imagine is still a lot better than they're doing right now if they all have day jobs.
Now my figures don't account for taxes, platform fees or processing fees. All those are very much a real thing we'd have to figure out and deal with. But I hope you can see how, strangely enough, direct payment is something sorely missing from today's ad-supported and subscription service world.
