I’m not a fan.
Skillfully used, they’re a writing tool for adding nuance to a story in multiple ways. Never, though, should they serve as backward looking info dumps. That, for me is the problem.
Too often, they're misused to dump (often unnecessary) backstory on the reader rather than weave it into the narrative. My conclusion? The reason for the interruption better be amazing.
In eleven novels I’ve used them in—one.
