And yes, shortcuts (I figured lists might be more familiar and easier language)! That's basically what I've done: lumped all the writing hashtags together into a shortcut, unfollowed from my main feed, and then check on it once a day or so. Same with news tags etc so my main feed hashtags are just like...nice hashtags and friends 
The only downside I've found is that you can't access the shortcuts on mobile (unless I'm missing it, which is highly probable)
And me too re: feeling fediverse challenged. I tried out Hubzilla but I'm still not sure how to search for things over there. And ActivityPub for WordPress still isn't working quite right, so it'll be in troubleshooting for awhile lol
