ever since 9/11, we've had this "security ratchet" where Republicans establish some new horrible institutional practice and the Democrats are like "well, it's an institutional practice now, we have to respect it." for 23 years, the ratchet has only ever tightened. and now we have these authoritarian, heavily-armed security forces that are politically aligned with the far right and a Republican candidate promising to use them to root out "vermin" and liberals are like "gosh, how did we get here??
