What bugs me most about it is the story never really gives any good reason why the new gods are bad and the old ones good-- the book even turns around on itself and reflects on how there isn't any real distinction there. But then, in so many other ways, places value in one place and scorn in the other... all without flinching from all of the ugliness of "old ways" not one bit.
This is a slightly harsh reading of what it's saying, but not far from the mark I think.
