Today's bastard disappointment. My 19th century dictionary says 'bastard' comes from 'fils de bast' (son of the saddle). That would be satisfyingly similar to 'son of a gun'. But Wiktionary says it's unlikely since 'bast' only became used for 'saddle' in the 13th century.
