Thomas Hancock (nprofile…5y8c) I think it is one of those large-scale projects to measure "misinformation". They were renting time on a big university cluster funded by the NSF, and the NSF (formerly one of the few respectable government agencies; please don't tell me anything terrible about NOAA or NASA or the USGS) has been at this before, so probably someone spending NSF grant money on some awful dystopian shit to present to the government.
The really interesting thing is that they were trying to map relationships in addition to doing a lot of timeline-scraping. (Just grabbing metadata from the metadata endpoints, even Misskey does that; but scraping the timelines and trying to build a relationship graph and ignoring robots.txt, that's a solid indicator that they're up to something fucked up.)
