The NASA meatball was hard banned in the 1980s in favor of the worm. NASA literally had an iconoclasm, purging all instances of the meatball within the agency (except a few holdouts like one old hanger in Virginia).
The meatball was brought back on Shuttle initially just for John Glenn's Shuttle flight in 1996 (to give it retro flair), but proved so popular that NASA was pressured to switch fully over to it and drop the worm. Now, the worm is almost totally memoryholed itself...
