JR West has announced that they are finally going to retire their 500 Series Shinkansen trains… in 2027, a full 30 years after introduction. This is a remarkably long service life for a Shinkansen train, only surpassed by the original JR Central 0 Series which ran for 44 years and just barely by the JR East 200 Series which lasted 31.
