I called out on the other site that shall not be named, and Mark Struberg and other folks chimed in. Eventually, Mark rubber ducked so hard, we shifted focus on the software.

Turns out, putting a felt cover in, or any big object really, will significantly increase the number of ultrasonic distance measurement events. That increase starved the CPU, which meant audio couldn't be delivered to the speaker on time, resulting in the stutter.

Easy fix: turn off the sensor while audio plays.
