what this comes down to is that if they stick with the policies of their big donors like AIPAC and lose they keep getting money, if they do what the voters want but go against the donors they lose money.

Winning the election is secondary to keeping the donors happy. There are pretty much no negative consequences for the dems aside from losing funding.
