People actually believe that chats are secure because "nobody I know" can see them. The only thing that caused panic in the Twitter files from the same group that told everyone "it's a nothing burger" was that whoever is in charge of Twitter today can read your DMs. There are numerous people who used them as secure chats, including journalists even.
