so my wife is Japanese, been in the US for 11+ years, but even still occasionally gets tripped up by random English expressions, idioms, etc.
Most recently I said "do not attribute to malice that which can be attributed to incompetence" as we were discussing the utter failure of the Georgia government. [deer in headlights stare]
So I explained each part of the expression, even revisited some definitions and such... About 5 minutes in total explaining it....
She paused for a second and goes "so they're more likely to be stupid than evil"
